EAGAN, Minn. — The Minnesota Vikings announced on Saturday that rookie cornerback Khyree Jackson has tragically passed away in a car accident in his home state of Maryland.
In a statement, the organization expressed profound sadness over Jackson's death and extended support to his family, teammates, and coaches:
"We are devastated by the news of Khyree Jackson's passing in a car accident overnight. As we gather more information, we have been in contact with Khyree's family to offer our deepest condolences and support from the Minnesota Vikings. We have also informed our players, coaches, and staff about this heartbreaking loss and are providing counseling to anyone needing emotional assistance. Our thoughts are with Khyree's family, friends, teammates, and coaches during this incredibly difficult time, as well as with all those affected by this tragic accident."
Jackson, 24, was drafted by the Vikings with the 108th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Known for his vibrant personality, Jackson made an immediate impression during video interviews with local media in the Twin Cities.
Khyree Jackson's journey to the NFL included stops at multiple colleges, starting with Alabama before transferring to Oregon, where he eagerly anticipated fulfilling his dream at football's highest level.
Standing tall at 6-foot-4 and weighing 194 pounds, Jackson was known for his broad smile and friendly demeanor. He quickly bonded with teammates, coaches, and staff during the Vikings' rookie minicamp and offseason program.
Vikings Head Coach Kevin O'Connell expressed deep sorrow over Jackson's passing, saying, "I am absolutely crushed by this news. Khyree brought contagious energy to our facility and team. His confidence and engaging personality immediately drew his teammates to him."
"In our brief time together, it was clear Khyree had the potential to become an outstanding professional football player," O'Connell added. Jackson's path to the NFL was marked by challenges. After leaving Arizona Western Community College due to homesickness, he returned to Maryland, where he worked at a grocery store deli and was honored as employee of the month. Jackson later resumed his football journey at Fort Scott Community College and East Mississippi Community College, where his 2020 season was canceled.
